Atrium Health Union West Is Adding a Patient Tower. What Does It Mean If I'm Buying Near Stallings?

Hospital campus with construction crane and landscaped entrance near Stallings NC

Atrium Health Union West is adding a patient tower, and buyers near Stallings should know the facts before they guess what it means for a home. The project is real and funded. What it will do to traffic, noise, or home values is not something anyone can state as fact today, so I'd treat it as a reason to do a bit more homework, not a reason to panic or celebrate.

Quick Answer: Atrium Health says the $116 million Union West tower adds more than 67,000 square feet, 88 patient rooms, and 11 emergency bays, with an opening expected in fall 2028. Atrium did not list jobs, a street address for the tower, or any effect on home values. Jennifer Ledford of The Ledford Group at eXp Realty tells Stallings and Matthews buyers to check construction, traffic, and access in person before making an offer.

I'm Jennifer Ledford with The Ledford Group at eXp Realty. This isn't brand new news. Atrium Health announced it on September 10, 2026, so I'm not going to call it breaking. But buyers keep asking me about it, and some of the talk online goes further than the facts support. I'll stick to what is documented.

What is Atrium Health building at Union West?

According to Atrium Health's September 10, 2026 announcement, the expansion at Atrium Health Union West includes:

- A $116 million patient tower adding more than 67,000 square feet.

- 88 new patient rooms.

- 11 new emergency department bays.

- One endoscopy room and one procedure room.

- More imaging, ancillary, and support services.

Atrium says the expanded hospital is expected to open in fall 2028. The general contractor is DPR Construction. Atrium said the hospital recently broke ground on the tower and did not give an exact date.

Why is the hospital expanding?

Atrium reports that patient visits have grown 127% since the hospital opened in February 2022, and that it has served more than 200,000 patients. Local coverage from Hoodline notes the original hospital opened with 40 licensed acute care beds and 10 emergency bays. Atrium's president for the hospital, Seth Goldwire, said Union County's growth is driving the expansion.

The state's 2025 Medical Facilities Plan identified a need for 136 more acute care beds in Union County, according to Hoodline. In March 2026, regulators conditionally approved a separate $346 million, 32-bed Novant Health hospital in Wesley Chapel. That is a different project from this one.

Where is it, and who does it serve?

Local coverage places Atrium Health Union West in Stallings, and Atrium describes it as serving Union County and southeastern Mecklenburg County. Atrium's release uses a Matthews dateline. I'm not going to place any specific neighborhood a certain distance from the site, because I haven't measured it. Pull up a map and check any home you're considering.

Will it change traffic, noise, or home values?

Here is what is not known. Atrium's release doesn't state hiring numbers, construction hours, truck routes, or any traffic study. I haven't seen data showing how the tower will change nearby home prices, and I won't guess. A hospital expansion can mean different things to different buyers. Some like being near medical care. Others worry about added traffic or construction. Both views are fair.

What I can tell you is how I'd check it:

1. Visit the site and the roads around it at the times you'd drive them, including a weekday morning and a Saturday.

2. Ask the Town of Stallings and the Town of Matthews whether any road or access changes are planned in connection with the project.

3. Ask Atrium Health about the construction schedule and expected hours.

4. Look at the route from the home to the hospital entrance, and from the home to the road you use to get to work.

5. Review your must-haves. If quiet at night matters, stand outside the house at night.

What does this change for a buyer's decision?

For most buyers it changes a little, and in one specific way. It adds a long-term fact about the area. A hospital with more capacity may be a plus for some buyers, a neutral for others, and a minus for a few. You are the one who decides, and I won't tell you how to feel about it.

What I'd avoid is paying more because of the tower, or walking away because of it, without any evidence. If a seller says the expansion will raise the value of their home, ask for the sold-home data that supports it.

What else is around Stallings and Matthews?

If you're comparing areas, Matthews has Squirrel Lake Park, with a lake, disc golf, and a walking trail, and the Matthews Community Farmers Market on Trade Street is a Saturday tradition. Sycamore Commons has groceries and restaurants, including Kabab-Je Rotisserie & Grille. These are fixed details of the area that don't depend on the tower.

How do I protect myself when I buy near a construction project?

Put your questions in writing. Ask your agent to find the zoning of nearby parcels, and ask for the seller's disclosures. A home inspection tells you about the house, not about the neighborhood, so pair it with your own visit. If the home is in a homeowners association, read the rules on noise, parking, and exterior changes.

I follow the Committed Client Method, which means I'm fully on your side from the first tour. I'd rather you hear a plain "I don't know yet" from me than a confident guess from someone trying to sell you a house.
