What Does the Union County Schools Five-Year Plan Mean for Weddington Buyers?

By Jennifer Ledford, REALTOR · Published · 4 min read

Tree-lined road in Weddington NC in early fall

Union County Public Schools approved a new five-year strategic plan for 2026 to 2031, but the plan is a set of district priorities, not a change to any school's boundaries or any home's value. For Weddington buyers, what matters is knowing what it says and what it doesn't.

I'm Jennifer Ledford with The Ledford Group at eXp Realty, and school questions come up in nearly every Weddington conversation I have. I'll keep this to facts you can check.

Quick Answer: The Union County Board of Education unanimously approved its 2026-2031 strategic plan on February 12, 2026, according to the Enquirer Journal. It focuses on a safe and supportive environment, academic achievement, innovation, recruitment and retention, and family and community connections. It does not, by itself, change which school a Weddington address is assigned to.

What is in the plan?

According to the Enquirer Journal, the plan took two years to develop in-house without outside consultants. The district gathered input from surveys with more than 500 responses, a superintendent's advisory council, and committee sessions. The five focus areas are:

- A safe and supportive environment for students and staff - Advancing academic achievement - Fostering innovation - Improving recruitment and retention - Strengthening family and community connections

WSOC-TV also reported on the plan's priorities, including safety, mental health services, and technology preparation. The superintendent, Dr. Andrew Houlihan, said stakeholders would get monthly updates through district committees.

Some sources describe a launch in late September. I couldn't confirm a launch date from the district, so I'm not going to state one.

Does it change Weddington High or Weddington Middle?

The plan applies district-wide. I did not find anything in it that changes attendance zones or names specific changes for Weddington High or Weddington Middle.

Here are a few facts. Weddington High opened in 2000 and, according to Wikipedia, had 1,857 students in the 2023-24 school year. The Warriors compete in the Southern Carolina 4A conference, and the school has a Marine Corps JROTC program. Weddington Middle sits with Weddington Elementary on the same campus, per the same source. Check current numbers with the district, because enrollment moves.

What should Weddington buyers do?

Verify the assignment for the exact address. Union County Public Schools sets assignments by address, and boundaries can change. Addresses near a boundary can be assigned differently than you'd expect, so don't rely on a listing or a neighbor.

Then read the plan itself, and ask the district how its priorities show up at the specific school. If a program matters to your family, such as JROTC, athletics, or a particular course, ask the school directly what's offered.

I won't tell you a school is "great" or a neighborhood is "perfect for" anyone. Those words don't tell you anything you can check. Facts do.

What is nearby in Weddington?

Weddington Optimist Park has about 50 acres of youth sports fields. Weddington Swim & Racquet Club is a community landmark with tennis, pickleball, and a pool. For dinner, 131 MAIN Restaurant and Little Mama's Italian are two names locals mention, and Downtown Waxhaw's Main Street shops are about 10 minutes from many neighborhoods.

Which Weddington neighborhoods do buyers compare?

Weddington has a range. Hadley Park, Atherton, Bromley, and Weddington Preserve are among the neighborhoods buyers ask me about, and Lake Providence and Weddington Heritage sit in a higher price tier. Each has different lot sizes and ages, so compare them in person and by closed sales.

Should the plan change when you buy?

No. If anything, timing depends on your finances, your budget, and current rates. A district plan is one piece of information. I'd treat it that way.
